Uninstalling Applications

Introduction

Windows 95/98 keeps a record of all applications installed on your system in the Windows Registry. In order to maintain backwards compatibility with older versions of Windows, the operating system also keeps a record of certain applications through .INI files in the Windows folder. Whenever you want to uninstall a program from your system, you should follow the following procedure.

Step by Step Instructions

Using Control Panel

  1. Click the Start button on the Taskbar and select Settings and then Control Panel. The Control Panel will be displayed:

  2. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon to open the Add/Remove Programs Properties sheet:

  3. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties sheet, make sure the Install/Uninstall tab is selected.

  4. Scroll down through the list of applications which Windows 95 can remove automatically. Locate the application you wish to remove. If you are unable to find the application, close the properties sheet and go onto the next step Using the Uninstall Program provided with the Software.

  5. Highlight the application by selecting it and click on the Add/Remove button.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the program from your system.

  7. Proceed to the final step Tidying Up Your Desktop.

Using the Uninstall Program Provided with the Software

If you were unable to remove the application using the Control Panel, then try the following procedure to uninstall the program using the uninstaller provided with the software.

  1. Click the Start button on the Taskbar and select Programs. Locate and open the folder containing the application you want to uninstall.

  2. Locate the shortcut for the Uninstaller provided with the software. If you are unable to find such a program, go onto the next step Removing the Application Manually.

  3. Click on Uninstall and follow the on-screen instructions to remove the application from your system.

  4. Proceed to the final step Tidying Up Your Desktop.

Removing the Application Manually

So you have been unsuccessful in trying to remove the application using the methods outlined above? Follow these instructions to remove the application manually.

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Open.

  2. Double-click on the Programs folder to open up the Windows 95 Start Menu\Programs folder:

  3. Locate and open the folder that contains the application you wish to remove.

  4. Locate the shortcut for the application.

  5. Right-click on the shortcut icon and select Properties to open the applications Properties sheet:

  6. Make a note of the application's location. In the above example it is C:\Windows.

  7. Click on the Start button and select Programs. Open Windows Explorer by clicking on it in the Start menu.

  8. Locate the folder containing the application. Delete the application and any other unwanted application folders or files by dragging them to the Recycle Bin.

  9. Close down any open folders then proceed to the next step Tidying Up Your Desktop.

Tidying Up Your Desktop

Even if you have removed the application successfully through the Control Panel, you may have unwanted shortcuts to the program on your system.

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Open.

  2. Double-click on the Programs folder to open up the Windows 95 Start Menu\Programs folder.

  3. Locate the folder that contains the application you wish to remove and drag it to the Recycle Bin.

  4. Close the Programs folder(s).

  5. Locate any shortcuts for the application on your Desktop. Drag these to the Recycle Bin.

  6. Restart your computer.

  7. If you are satisfied that your system is behaving normally, empty your Recycle Bin to complete the uninstallation process.
