Creating a Windows Startup Disk

Contents

Introduction

Many problems can be avoided by creating a Windows 95/98 startup diskette. If for some reason Windows is unable to start from your hard disk, a bootable startup disk will enable you to access the hard disk to diagnose the cause of the problem. In the event that you need to reinstall Windows 95/98 from the CD-ROM, you will need to be able to access your CD-ROM drive from this startup diskette.

The following instructions outline the procedure for creating a startup diskette and copying across your CD-ROM drivers to this diskette.

Step by Step Instructions

Creating a Startup Diskette

  1. Place a clean, formatted floppy diskette in drive A:

    Add/Remove Programs

  2. Click the Start menu on the Taskbar and select Settings and then Control Panel. The Control Panel will be displayed.

  3. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs Icon. The Add/Remove Programs Properties sheet will be displayed.

  4. Click on the Startup Disk tab.

  5. Click Create Disk. You will be asked to insert the Windows 95 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.

  6. Place the CD-ROM in the drive and click OK. You will be asked to label a disk and place it in drive A:. Click OK.

  7. When Windows 95 has finished creating your Startup disk, click OK.

  8. Add CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to the Startup disk (as below). If you have a CD-ROM drive, add the drivers for your drive.
