Driving Targeted Traffic To Your Web Site

What techniques should you avoid?

A number of techniques can get your site omitted from the rankings. Techniques to avoid include:

  • Spamming (submitting too many pages or too often)

  • Customising your site for too many or the wrong keywords

  • The use of hidden text (text which is the same colour as background), phantom pixels (small, transparent images hidden in your document) and hidden hyperlinks (hyperlinks embedding phantom pixels)

  • Submitting poor pages (pages with missing hyperlinks, poor spelling, or "site under construction")

Be careful with the use of FRAMES. Not all search engines support these. If using FRAMES, make sure you use the NOFRAMES declaration to provide a description of the pages you are linking to, with hyperlinks to those pages. In any event, do not use frames on the home page as this gives the spider relatively little content to work with.
