Driving Targeted Traffic To Your Web Site
How should I submit my site?
Obtaining a top ranking with a search engine involves a complex cycle of submitting, monitoring visitors to your site, resubmitting and so on. Here are some general guidelines:
- Don't submit until you are ready, you have spell checked all your pages and checked all the hyperlinks.
- Choose the TITLE of your document carefully as most search engines will use this as the title for your entry in their results page.
- Write your META tag description with care, as this is what most search engines will use to describe the page you have submitted. A catchy, interesting statement about your page will encourage searchers to click through to your site. There is no benefit to be gained from being ranked in the top ten if searchers don't actually click on your link.
- Compare your site with the top ranked pages and optimise your site for the occurrence of keywords in those pages.
- Submit your site.
- Monitor visitors to your site. How did they find your site? Which search engines did they use? Which keywords did they enter?
- Monitor your ranking with each of the major search engines for each of the keyword combinations you have identified. How high are you ranked? Which pages have they indexed (i.e. home page or another file)?
- Modify your pages.
- Resubmit.
- Continue to monitor your site on a week-by-week basis, resubmitting as necessary. Do not oversubmit, as some search engines will exclude you if they think you are spamming.
