Driving Targeted Traffic To Your Web Site

How can you achieve a high ranking?

The first task is to identify the keyword combinations that are most likely to drive traffic to your site. In the wedding example we have been using, my client sells second hand designer wedding dresses. So at first sight, "second hand wedding dresses" or "designer wedding dresses" might seem most appropriate. But what if no one actually types in these terms? Alternatives might be to type in "used wedding dresses" or "designer wedding gowns".

So, how do we find out what people are actually searching for? Fortunately, a number of tools exist which help us to identify the phrases most likely to drive traffic to your web site. In the wedding dress example, we were able to produce a report similar to the one below:

Top Ranking Keywords

(Example report)

Keyword Count Predicted 24Hrs
weddings 1553 9005
wedding 1517 8796
wedding dresses 1114 6459
wedding invitations 1084 6285
wedding gowns 671 3891
wedding cakes 530 3073
wedding rings 476 2760
wedding vows 458 2656
bridal gowns 436 2528
wedding songs 404 2342
wedding planning 360 2087
used wedding dresses 18 104
second hand wedding dresses 0 0

Thus in our wedding example, we find that relatively few people are typing in "second hand wedding dresses" or "used wedding dresses" and that an overwhelming majority of people are typing "wedding dresses" or "wedding gowns". Clearly a site optimised for these keywords is likely to attract much more traffic than for the above keyword combinations.

Having identified the keywords most likely to attract visitors to our site, we then have to customise our site for those words, placing them in appropriate places in the TITLEs of our documents, and in the body of the text as well. Before we can do that, we need to identify the top ranking sites for our choice of keywords and determine exactly how those sites achieved a high ranking.

By analysing the frequency and occurrence of keywords in the top ranked page or pages, we can customise our site to have a similar or hopefully better distribution of words and therefore a good chance of gaining a higher ranking than the pages currently ranked first.

Our wedding example might look something like this:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Designer Wedding Dresses and Bridal Wear</TITLE>
<META NAME="keywords" content="wedding dresses, wedding gowns">
<META NAME="description" content="The premier site for new and once worn wedding dresses-">
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<H1>Designer Wedding Dresses for Sale</H1>
<P>We sell used and second hand <A HREF="wedding_dresses.html"> wedding dresses</A>, with gowns from top designers, including Alan Hannah-</P>
</BODY>
</HTML>
