Running Disk Defragmenter

Introduction

Disk Defragmenter is a disk optimiser. It should be run about once a month to check the integrity of files on the hard disk, and to organise the file space on the disk. Before running Disk Defragmenter, it is recommended that you carry out a full or partial backup of your hard disk. You should also close any open applications and disable your screen saver (right-click on the Desktop, select Properties, click on the Screen Saver tab and set the screen saver to "None").

Step by Step Instructions

Defragmenting Your Hard Disk

  1. Click the Start menu on the Taskbar and select Programs, Accessories, System Tools and then Disk Defragmenter. The following screen will be displayed:

    Select Drive

  2. Make sure your Hard disk (C:) is selected and click OK. You will now receive a message of the type:

    Disk Defragmenter

  3. Click Start to defragment your hard disk. The defragmentation process will now commence:

  4. To watch the Defragmenter organising your disk space click on Show Details. You will see the following display. Click on Legend to see a key to the disk optimisation process.

  5. When the operation has been completed you will see the following message:

    Defragmenting Complete

  6. Click Yes to exit the Disk Defragmenter.
