HTML and XHTML Validation

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has laid down guidelines on how web pages should be coded using the web languages Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Extended HTML (XHTML).

The W3C provides the facility to check that your web pages and style sheets are valid and follow the guidelines, just as authors follow rules for spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Websites that are 'valid' help both web developers and users, since they load more quickly and tend to display information correctly. A page that follows all the rules will do EXACTLY what the developer intends it to do, preventing the need for browsers to interpret poorly written code. An added benefit is that pages that 'validate' are more likely to be compatible across multiple browser versions (see Cross Browser Compatibility).
